Oct 3, 2018 | Reviews

Flame Boss is a brand that was founded in 2013 by brothers Roger and Michael Collins. With Roger’s passion for BBQ and some convincing, he was able to bring Flame Boss into the world.

The Flame Boss 200 is a temperature controller designed for the three major Kamado grill brands. Including the Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, and Primo.

Let’s take a look at how this temperature controller elevates the Kamado grilling experience.

Included in the package is the PID controller, mounting brackets, power adapter, blower, blower adapter, meat probe, and a grill grate clip/probe.

The Flame Boss PID controller is enclosed in a thick silicon film. It is attached to a mounting bracket that can be attached in the vicinity of your ceramic grill. The controller is super user-friendly and the display and controls are easy to read, understand, and use. The backlit LCD display tells you the temperature of your meat, your target temperature, the current temperature, and the fan speed.

While these are all fairly basic, the Flame Boss more than makes up for it with the following features. The first being auto-learning technology that is able to learn how your smoker acts. This information is then applied to future smokes making for less fiddling with settings. The controller is also able to know and understand when to drop the temperature when your target internal meat temperature is reached. The controller can also understand when the lid is open and pause operations and resume when the lid is closed. This is ideal because you don’t want a controller to start increasing the temperature and then close the lid as it does more harm than good. Rather it pauses operation and resumes and starts the fan only when the lid is closed.

The probes of this device are something that shouldn’t be overlooked. Other brands should take note because this is how they are supposed to be. They feature a Teflon coating, a click for the grates and a probe for the meat. With that said, you are limited to only two that are six feet in length.

All the data gathered by the probes is then sent to the https://myflameboss.com/ website that you can log in to and sync your controller too.

Conclusion

In terms of PID controllers for Kamado Grills, you would be hard pressed to find something that even compares to this device. You get everything you need in a single package backed by a generous 1-year warranty. If you aren’t tech savvy, then this device is perfect for you. From start to finish it’s easy to set up and use.
