One thing is for certain, this is a slicer that will excel in a commercial kitchen or home environment where you really do need to churn out meats on-demand!

The carbon steel blade is designed to need fewer sharpening’s over time, plus the entire rig is sheathed in stainless steel, just as you might expect from a commercial grade kitchen appliance.

In Use

The first thing you must understand about the Beswood slicer, is that it’s a genuine commercial grade machine. It also retails for upwards of $300, so you really need to operate a kitchen that gets a lot of use to justify purchasing it.

Once you’ve justified it though, there’s really nothing to complain about during use. That steel blade makes short work of anything you can throw at it, plus the guides and switches all operate with a satisfying click – exactly what a professional grade piece of equipment should do.

One of the cool things about the Beswood, are the adjustable feet underneath the blade. This is to ensure that wherever you put the slicer, it won’t rock or become unsteady.

We sliced ham and potatoes on this slicer, and it ate them all up easily.

Pros: a superb piece of equipment that should give many years of excellent service.

Cons: As a professional grade machine, you’ll pay for the privilege of ownership!

2. Chef’s Choice 615 Electric Food Slicer

This time around, were moving away from the commercial grade slicer, into a model that would be far more at home in the domestic setting. The Chef’s Choice 615 is a similar design to the Beswood, yet it’s almost half the price and perhaps not quite so capable.

The Chef’s Choice comes with the option of 1 or two blades, cast aluminium exterior and has blades made from stainless steel. It also has a safety catch to lock off the blades when not in use, a handy nod to the fact domestic kitchens have children in them!

In Use

We weren’t expecting the Chef’s Choice to be as good as the Beswood reviewed above, after all, they operated in two different worlds; however, the Chef’s Choice still impressed us.

The slicing mechanisms and exterior aluminium look good, and all work extremely well. Build quality is high, perhaps understandable considering how the rest of the Chef’s Choice range shapes up.

The adjustable slicer control is good too, and we managed to slice meats and cheese perfectly; however, boiled eggs were a little bit of an issue, as the blade couldn’t make a clean cut.

As the features suggest, the Chef’s Choice is a snap to clean. All the parts pop out easily, and as it’s aluminium, it doesn’t mind a little bit of soap to get everything clean again.

Pros: Well made, easy to clean and cuts most items.

Cons: Won’t slice eggs unfortunately.

3. Manual Frozen Meat Slicer

This is a slicer with a difference, instead of being able to slice all meats and vegetables, this time around we’re reviewing a slicer that handles frozen meats and hard fruits.

This slicer, as it’s not electronic, is much cheaper than even the Chef’s Choice. Coming in at just under $60, it’s a budget slicer that can tackle fewer jobs.

  • Designed to slice hard fruits, vegetables and frozen meats.
  • Manual operation.
  • Handy for rolling meat.

In Use

This slicer is a handy piece of kit, yet only for a small number of niche uses. We found its ability to slice frozen meat was perfect, and it was capable of rolling meat brilliantly.

Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for its fruit and vegetable cutting abilities. Here, it could only tackle unripe fruits, and once any fruit or vegetable had started to soften, it was more than hopeless.

Still, it could be the perfect slicer for someone who likes making hot pots and certain ethnic foods; however, it’s uses are limited in comparison to the electric slicers reviewed above.

Pros: Cheap, and cuts frozen meats perfectly.

Cons: Doesn’t do much else!

4. KitchenWare Station Commercial Meat Slicer

Now we’re really pushing the budget and, moving towards the real commercial end of the meat slicer market! The KWS Premium Commercial meat slicer, is a 420-Watt mammoth that promises to slice its way through anything you can throw at it.

Of course, this meat slicer isn’t going to be for everyone. It costs just over $500, which puts it within the realm of extremely busy households and commercial use.

Even so, there’s lots to like about this meat slicer. It has a 12-inch Teflon blade, aluminium alloy base and has steadying adjustable feet for commercial use.

In Use

The differences between this meat slicer and the others reviewed are huge. Even the Beswood, which comes in at $300 doesn’t come close to the KWS slicer, and we were impressed by the quality of it!

To set the KWS slicer up does take a few minutes, there are a couple of safety guards that need fitting, plus you’ll want to get those adjustable feet sorted before you hit the on button.

In this way, it’s like the Beswood, and for lower end commercial operators both brands are probably what they’re looking towards in a meat slicer.

The adjustable slicing ends are good quality, and allow movement easily; not forgetting those adjustable feet too, which are nice and solid on most surfaces. Everything about this product screams quality and longevity of use – something we’re use fans of!

The biggest question to answer with the KWS slicer, is whether it’s any better than the Beswood. In our view, you’re probably best off going with the Beswood for everything apart from serious commercial work.

Pros: Superb, just amazing quality and craftsmanship.

Cons: It’s $500, so you need a true business case to back up your purchase.

Final thoughts

It’s hard to just pick one meat slicer, because so many people use them for all manner of jobs – both commercial and domestic. Even so, we’ll split down into different users and pick the best one for that category.

For lighter domestic work – There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the Chef’s Choice here. It’s just under $150 and works like a charm. Aluminium casing and stainless streel blades sweeten the deal.

For Frozen Meats – There’s only one choice, and that’s the Manual Frozen Food Slicer. Just don’t expect it to be useful for too much else, especially fruits and vegetables!

For the commercial operator – The Beswood is likely to handle everything you can throw at it. Only in very specific circumstances would we suggest you look towards the more expensive KWS slicer. In our mind, these would stretch to a small factory, or an extremely busy caterer serving a huge number of clients each day.

For anything else, the Beswood will serve you just fine.
